You can find Chinese five spice powder in supermarkets or Chinese supermarkets. It is a mixture of cinnamon, fennel, star anise, cloves and Szechuan peppercorns and works very well with pork, or chicken.
Ingredients – serves 4
4 x 8oz pork loin steaks
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp hoi sin sauce
1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp minced ginger
½ tbsp Chinese five spice powder
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp cornflour
Method
In a large freezer bag add the soy sauce, hoi sin sauce, sweet chilli sauce, garlic, ginger and five spice, add the pork loins and coat with the marinade. Place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, turning the bag over every now and again.
We would recommend a total marinading time of 2 hours but if you want a very intense flavour you can leave in the refrigerator over night.
In a large frying pan add the oil, remove the loins from the bag and wipe off some of the marinade but not all, lightly dust with cornflour on both sides, patting off any excess. Carefully add the loins to the frying pan, cook on each side until golden brown. Reduce the heat to a medium and cook the loins until cooked through, around 6 minutes in total.
Remove from the pan, arrange on a plate and drizzle over some extra hoi sin sauce and sprinkle with a pinch of toasted sesame seeds.
Serve with steamed rice and stir fried vegetables.
